Traveling through Australia with a campervan, what a great idea! With its breathtaking coastlines and endless distances through the outback, Australia is one of the best places to go on a road trip.
To narrow down your search for a suitable campervan you should know what features are important to you. This article will give you a good overview of the different kinds of campervan models and what to look out for.

How to choose the right campervan

There is a huge variety of campervans in Australia and many different offers to choose from. That is great, but it can also become overwhelming if you don’t know what you are looking for. Ask yourself the following questions about your preferences and keep in mind that you will spend a lot of time in the campervan. The van will become your second home where you will cook, eat and sleep. It will also be your place to rest, so you can recharge and have enough energy for all of your amazing adventures.

  • Do you prefer to drive an automatic vehicle or are you comfortable with a stick shift?
  • How important is accessibility to the kitchen to you?
  • Would you like to be able to stand up in the camper? (High Top)
  • Would you like a refrigerator? (A refrigerator is practical, but also consumes a lot of battery!)
  • Would you like a toilet or/and shower in the vehicle? (for the luxurious ones out there ;))

The average backpacker camper in Australia costs between $40 to $180 per day. The more expensive models (high tops, motorhomes) range from $80 to $300 per day, but prices vary depending on the season. Based on our experience we have divided the different campervan types into 5 categories as listed below.

Before you start reading please note that we would love to assist you with finding the right campervan. Our services are 100% free and we can guarantee the same price (even sometimes cheaper) than if you would book through the supplier directly.

1) Campervan-Car

These kinds of vans are very practical for 2 people with their sliding door and a kitchen in the rear. They are equipped to optimize space and prepare you for all the daily basics. This camper-type is the most popular one as you can easily park them anywhere and because of their relatively low fuel consumption. The most common rental companies are Spaceships and Jucy

2) Hippie Camper

Hippie campers, or hippie vans, are the "cheapest" backpacker option. But be careful, these vehicles are cheap to hire but often come with hidden costs due to high fuel consumption as most of the vehicles are pretty old. But they are definitely #instagrammable though! These campers often come equipped with a cooler, a gas stove, and a sink and provide space for two people.
Companies like Lucky, Travellers Autobarn, and Campervan Village offer these vehicles.

3) Hightops

Hightops are, as the name suggests, motorhomes with a high roof and therefore allow you to stand upright inside of them. These campers are ideal for couples who want to travel with better comfort and are willing to spend a little more. These types of campers can also be used to travel in groups of 3-4 people as they come with 2 sleeping options.
Well-known providers are Hippie, Travellers Autobarn, and Britz.

4) "Semi" Motorhome

This campervan model is suitable for at least 3 people who like it a little more luxurious, but prefer to stay on a backpacker budget. They are taller than normal campervans and come with a built-in toilet and shower.
Mighty, Apollo, Cheapa, Awesome Camper, and Camperman have the choice!

5) Motorhomes

These BIG motorhomes are equipped with almost anything you'd need in a normal house. They are the most expensive but also by far the most luxurious vehicles. As they offer plenty of space, a built-in shower, and a toilet, they are the best option to go on a road trip with your parents.
These models can be found at Apollo, Maui, and Cheapa Campa
