A healthy skin, a fabulous hairstyle and flawless make-up - the dream for every traveller who likes to take beautiful holiday pictures! In hostels, however, keeping your beauty routine up can sometimes be a challenge. You have to share a room and bathroom, it’s a struggle to find a free socket and, generally speaking, everything is different from home, sweet home.

You are, however, fully equipped with the following travel-ready beauty hacks! You won’t have to compromise on your next hostel stay ;)

Let's go!

Selfcare while Traveling

Basics

First things first: Be sure to always wear flip-flops in the hostel showers! Even though many hostels are very clean, it can always be that… well… you know what we’re hinting at. Just do it for the well being of your own feet :D

Not all hostels provide enough mirrors for all their guests. Be sure to always bring a small hand mirror with you - so you can touch up your make-up or check your hairstyle everywhere.

It's also advisable to have your toiletries and everything you need for your beauty night routine easily accessible in your room. If it's a late night or your room mates are early birds, you can get your things without waking anyone up. You won’t have to neglect skin scare on any day! #hostellife

Drink and sleep, people! When you travel, you quickly forget to drink enough water and get enough sleep. Sure, it is also much too exciting to explore a new country or area! However, these two things, together with a healthy diet, are the cornerstones for great skin. So make sure not to neglect this (too much ;)).

Reusable make-up removal pads are a great alternative to traditional cotton pads. Just like the disposable version, they are very suitable for removing make-up. This makes them especially practical for travelling: You always have them at hand and will never need to buy more! This way you’re equipped even in the most remote hostels - and it's good for the environment, too!

This is how you clean them: After use, wash them out with soap and let them dry - that's it! But this step is especially important! Otherwise germs and bacteria could heap up on your reusable pads - you really don't want them on your skin.

Treat (for) your skin!

Our skin always reacts differently to external conditions - especially when changing climate zones on holiday! You’ll find some ideas for a travel beauty routine below:

A changing tap water quality in youth hostels, a different diet and dry air in buses, trains and planes are enough to cause the first pimples to appear...great timing, huh? Be prepared to fight those annoying spots and bring your favourite product from home. No time to experiment - get into action!

With warm temperatures and lots of sunshine it should be logical, but it’s better to mention it on time too often: If you’re sensitive, sunscreen is essential for a healthy skin! This is especially important for travel destinations like Australia, with a higher UV radiation. Apply sunscreen several times a day and bring a hat to protect you from sun rays and sunstrokes.

Tip: Some sun protection products are especially made for the sensitive facial skin. Additionally, you’re face won’t be as shiny after applying the cream.

Let’s say you sleep in a shared room and maybe are nervous to apply your face mask in front of other people. If so, don’t worry. You can have your own private space - even in a dorm!

How to do: Take a big sheet or towel and attach it to your bunk bed like a curtain. This way you are shielded from the eyes of others and can fully enjoy your beauty treatment! (But just between me and you: Taking care of yourself and your skin in a hostel room should actually not bother anyone!  You might even inspire your room mates to doing the same :)) #bebrave

Skincare

..for a perfect hairflip

We love them, but sometimes they are hard to tame (grrr): Our hair. To make life in the hostel easier, we have collected some of our favourite hacks and tips for always nailing that hairstyle on holiday.

Hostel hopping also means a constantly changing tap water quality. The result: your hair can look dull and loose its shine. A vinegar rinse will help: Mix apple vinegar (2 tablespoons) and water (1 litre) and pour over your hair after showering. Simply let it dry afterwards - the vinegar smell will disappears after a short time.

Vinegar helps to rinse the lime from the water out of your hair and closes the hair surface. The result: You get soft and shiny hair - even in the hostel!

A shampoo soap bar saves space and weight in your suitcase! Every hair has different needs, so just try out which product suits you best. You’ll have more space in your suitcase for souvenirs, too! Let's go shopping!

The perfect hairstyle for your adventure is sometimes hard to achieve in hostels. Either there are not enough sockets in front mirrors or you forget the curling iron... Whatever the problem might be. It's easy to get a nice curl with (drum roll) SOCKS! Trust us! Wrap slightly damp strands of hair around single socks before you go to bed. Tie them together and go to sleep. The next day loosen the socks and style them as you wish - voila!

Who would have thought that socks could do that?

All about multitasking

We’re already on the topic of multifunctional objects, so let’s keep it going! The less you pack, the easier you can travel from hostel to hostel! It is therefore advisable to choose products with a variety of uses to take with you!

Here are a few of our favourites:

  • Healing clay is amazing as a universal product! Mixed with water to form a paste, it helps locally with impure skin, sunburns, rashes and muscle and joint pain. Let it dry on the skin and then rinse off with lukewarm water. You can also add honey or chamomile tea - this way you enhance the caring and soothing effect of the mask.
  • Toothbrushes can also be used to exfoliate the lips. After brushing, move the still moist brush gently over the lips. Then rinse and apply lip balm...
  • ... Or also Coconut Oil, of course. This product not only helps against dry and sore skin. You can also use the cream to remove make-up and fight a bad breath!
  • Make-up can often do more than advertised on the package: Lip tints function as blush at the same time and natural colours on your eye shadow pallette can also be used to line the eyebrows. Get creative!
